Folks,
One thing is clear to me about this new toolset is that, there are basically
two different approaches, depending on the purpose of the analysis and what
one starts with.
First, there is the "existing" color list approach. Suppose I have a list of
CMYK values I'd like to study in relation with some ICC profile. Many things
can be done at this point, like converting those values to PCS or convert
those values to some Destination profile, to analyze the effect of the
conversion and study the resultant deltaE errors (out of gamut colors).
Second, there is the "no existing" color list approach, for the lack of
better words. Here, the idea is to use the software to generate lists of
device values that will serve to probe the nature of various color
conversions, again in the context of ICC profiles. This part of the software
is both flexible and powerful, I find, as it's able to generated device
lists based on many criteria, like sampling in RGB, CMYK and Lab. It's
possible to control how sparse the device sampling is, much like, in fact,
the way an ICC profile is actually gridded (17x17x17, etc.). This, I find,
is a novel idea. It's also possible to include device values that lie on the
gamut boundary, these so-called "edge" values, determining the actual extent
of a given color gamut.
I think the whole idea behind this new set of tools is to have some building
blocks to put ICC profiles to the test for gamut mapping, once and for all.
I'm far from having realize the whole potential of this novel set of tools
but I'm very encouraged.
