Apparently there's a bug in older EIZO ColorNavigator software that somehow
incorrectly 'labels' profiles as scene-referred.
Consequently, with 'compensate for scene-referred profiles' turned ON in CS4
color settings, PS does its thing and applies compensation.
The issue is fixed in current version 5.2.1. Since bug poster was using
version 5.1.2, it's likely that the bug was resolved even before 5.2.1

I just got a message from someone using Cinema display and HP Advanced
Profiling Solution who also noticed an inconsistency between CS3 and CS4
that was resolved by turning off 'compensate for scene-referred profiles'.
