That's well put, John.
And let's also remember that critics of color management and soft proofing
do (with malicious intent, I should add, specially certain ones named
Dan...) bring up the fact that CM is not perfect in order to dismiss it
completely. The point is not whether CM is perfect, but rather how it
compares to other ways that exist of preparing images for accurate output --
in terms of accuracy, efficiency, productivity, flexibility, and any other
parameters that make a difference in the practical and financial aspects of
quality output.
And on that count I don't think there are alternatives that work nearly as
reliably and predictably as CM, that are non-proprietary and also within
financial reach of most dedicated professionals.

Or even better: once all the pieces are ready and in place, the monitor and
the print will match without even trying.
Clients, even those who seem more resistant at first, are thrilled by the
results, and soon stop asking that "print-matching-the-monitor" question
once they realize how the whole setup works for them in actual practice.
