In SpectraShop you can use almost any light source, some are better
than others.
I have tried two different fluorescent tube illuminated slide viewers;
one worked well, the other was terrible. Whatever you use, make sure
the light source provides output from 380 to 780 nm without gaps!
Anywhere you have a gap in the spectrum will result in wildly varying
results. The reason one of my two slide viewers was terrible was
because the spectrum of its fluorescent tube had gaps in it. The other
slide viewer used a tube that produced no gaps in the spectrum.
LED or other sources without continuous spectra are also terrible
(which eliminated using my MacBook Pro as a portable slide measuring
device).
I recommend measuring the light source in emissive-monitor mode before
making any transparency measurements. Make sure the spectrum is
continuous across the visible spectrum. If it has a gap, its a trap
(my apologies to Johnny Cochran).

Robin and Graeme,
What is the light source used to read transparency values in
SpectraShop and
Argyll?
So far, the only transparencies readings I've done were taken using
Gretag
Macbeth's old Spectrolino/Spectroscan T, which would shine its own
built-in
light source behind the transmissive specimen.
