I think your idea of setting the f-number higher will only work if you exceed the diffraction limit of the lens.

This is an excellent suggestion. Another suggestion that might not be as
obvious which I have used with success is stopping down the lens (higher
f-number), when possible. This has the effect of making the cutoff frequency
of the system be the lens and not the detector (i.e. you are preventing the
high frequencies from reaching the detector) thereby making it impossible
for aliasing, and the resulting moire pattern, to occur in the digital
system.
