Yes, we are using Heidelbergs - Print Open(press profiling) + Color Proof Pro(proofer profiling and device linking)
We use the Meta RIP with the Adobe PDF Print Engine going to the PrePress Interface
which publishes the ink settings to the press console. We do use the Access Control for "presetting" the press.
We find, however, that we -more or less- stop the scanning once the press run begins.
We are, generally, a shorter run shop and we find that, during the run, the Image Control device is somewhat slow at responding to input
and faster color adjustments are made by the operator at the console.
I believe, we are experiencing quicker make ready times.
-
Our think our 2 main weaknesses would have to be:
- our press operator came up through the profession with manual press controlling
and is a bit slow and uncomfortable embracing the accuracy of technology.
She feels 'she' needs to think she is in control and has the Administration thinking she is always correct. (Not unusual, I think)
- we, in the PrePress have received minimal training in Color Handling.
I have been interested color for years and am the driving force in trying to develop accurate color handling.
But, without "formal" in depth training - I am pulling knowledge only from my years of reading, playing around, some press operation and love of photography and color.
I think we actually do a pretty good job.
Just this month we have:
relinearized our platesetter
built new calibration curves for the presses
re-profiled the press for our "main" house stocks
profiled and adjusted our HP5500.
We are looking pretty good, right now (for a bunch of rookies)
We are trying to get to neutral gray workflow
but really have no training for G7 or attaining any "Standard".
I am looking for a new proofing device, currently.
Maybe the HP 2100 or 6100 or possibly an Epson (no decision yet as we are reading reviews and user opinions at this time)
I would really love to learn, or have a professional help us, to bring our proofer the industry standard-which we could easily maintain-
then teach the pressroom to "hit" and maintain that standard.
Somehow, it is difficult to convince the pressroom that they have more variables for color inaccuracies than the RIP and Inkjet have.

I'm glad to hear how satisfy the HDM experience is making you. And say that
I almost went to the ICCdevCon conference in Portland, in November last year
-- we would have had a ball ;-)
Are you currently tapping into the integrated capabilities of ImageControl,
ICC profiling or process calibration, and assisted make-readies? Like, given
a target ICC profile and given press sheets measurements, are you able to
operate the system so that it will make the decisions about which ink keys
to operate in order to match the expected colors with the lowest deltaE? I
think this is definitely the way the industry is going.
