My understanding is that BPC was implemented by Adobe for use in their
apps, and though others are coming up with their own K point mapping,
there is no icc or accepted standard. Regarding the need for relcol with
BPC in my world, photography printing, it's need primarily results from
subjective and somewhat arbitrary perceptual mapping provided by various
profiles, again no standard.
Relcol with BPC "tends" to result in no surprises in the print, assuming
no gamut/clipping problems. Perceptual, from one profile package to
another, often varies in ways artists and clients may or may not like.
Don't like that? Let's try THIS profile...
Relcol tends to avoid this rarely discussed problem, and is generally
most accurate of course, but then we're back to a lack of BPC
implementation standard...
Regarding the original question, I can only imaging NOT using BPC when
proofing for another device as others have well described, but even
then, only when the proof system is capable of darker black than the
system being proofed.
We seem to be treading water with these issues for quite a few years now...
