You are using the classic "mess up my monitor to match my messed up
prints" version of color management. The currently recommended
solution would be to actually measure the output of your dyesub
system, build a custom printer profile from that, calibrate your
display, and then use Photoshop's softproof functions (RGB is fine
there, hasn't needed CMYK to softproof since Photoshop 6 came out) to
get an accurate preview of your printed output on screen. That would
require "more spyder challenging" in the form of Spyder3Print or a
similar package as well as Spyder3Elite...

i try to calibrate my monitor for a sublimation printer.
(I can't use a CMYK soft proof because its using RGB for printing)
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 226BW - contrast: 3000:1
Lightsource: 6500K
Calibrating: Spyder3 elite
Gamma: 2.2
System: Mac 10.5.6
I did the calibration (the monitor settings hue and contrast) by
comparing printed out images to the monitor - finally i came up with
something like: 40% hue and 30% contrast (monitor auto control
switched off)
(My normal settings for web based images are 98% hue and 54%
contrast with slight monitor sharpening)
The problem: Most images look good in color and hue but there is a
significant shift in contrast looking and intense color (like brown,
yellow in my case).
To describe better what it's looking like: Take the basic settings
and change the center level curve control in PS to 0.65 (1.00 by
default)
But i can't find any control achieving this kind of contrast
behavior with my monitor (changing the contrast on monitor doesn't
get any closer) - i did several profiling attempts including some
gamma 1.8 and mac system owned profiling.
so my question: is this something my colorimeter should do (and i
have to do some more spyder challenging) or is my monitor contrast
by dafault too low ?
