Ken,

RS-232 is a non-standard!

There are many "flavors" to it, so many in fact, that the chances of finding a replacement cable are slim if you do not look for certain features.

First, some cables are called nul-modem, reversing pin 2 and 3 for instance. Using such a cable when a straight-through cable is required will simply not work.

To make a long story short, you need to check, with a continuity tester (a multimeter set to test short-circuits, with a beeping sound, or set in resistance mode, where you look for near zero resistance for continuity) which pin corresponds to which pin, and compare your original cable with your replacement one. Concentrate on pins 1 to 8 to start, with a priority on pins 2, 3.

Subject: Spectroscan

Hi list. For those of you who are using, or have used, a Spectrolino
Spectroscan I have a question about the serial interface. Our serial cable
³developed² a bent pin, so we substituted another serial cable. The computer
was not able to recognize the Spectroscan at all. We tried to straighten the
pin on the first cable and it started working again. My boss remembers
something about the cable looking just like a serial cable, but that there
was something different about it from a standard serial cable. I¹ve never
been involved in the purchase or installation of this instrument, so I don¹t
really know.

The spec from X-Rite states that the interface is a standard RS 232C serial
interface.

Does anyone happen to know if there is something special about the cable
needed to connect the Spectrolino Spectroscan to the computer (via Keyspan
USB adapter)?

Thanks!

Ken
