Hello Sean:
Looking at histogram in ACR after ADNC you first WB the scene (and
NIKON says with reference white let the compensation to 0 and then
make white balance), and then measure the reference photemetric gray
card. If the object is lighter than medium gray CLOSE 2/3 and you will
have an overexposed image about +2/3 to 1 point and 1/3. If the object
is darker than 18% gray, then OPEN 1/2 point and you will get a black
with only 1 point subexposed.
This is what have to be make with traditional photometry, but in DSLR
almost only the first option.
To accurately resolve your scene you did well in the HDR masking the
white area left inferior, but the NEF was not.
As Graeme Gill told too, you better avoid underexposure, and look for
a fine histogram that in my honest opinion don´t have to touch to the
left or to the right, and Img0271.NEF is absolutely to the left. My
PS3 is not english version but, Black = 5, Bright = 50 and Contrast =
25 don´t agree with http://www.color.org/scene-referred.xalter and
http://www.color.org/scene_analysis_and_rendering.xalter
I use too the same trick that Andrew Rodney lowering contrast in the
camera screen because don´t want a red flash light to shout all day
when I know making acurate ETTR.
Have been said what kind of light source?. You shot f/7,1 1/20 s, so
you didn´t use flash. Subdued light with D65, or A?
Salud
Jose Bueno
