Hi All,

To put a little flesh on the bones...

This project was embarked upon to give the art teams a reliable softproofing environment, in an operation that had at that time absolutely a none colour managed environment.

The project was extremely cost driven, so the i1match/iDisplay2 combo won the day. Similarly after assessment with several high end monitors the ACD were again chosen for price point. However, the consistency that has been achieved has been remarkable.

There are 50+ art teams each with their own iDisplay2, ( no chance for 50 i1's!) and they calibrate the displays themselves every 4 weeks. We have experienced 4 maybe 5 instrument failures to date, in each case the problem was a distinct visible pink/magenta caste, after to all intents and purposes a successful calibration.

It is appreciated that the validation procedure is purely "scoring" the previously made profile with a set of pre-defined and somewhat tailored targets. However as a QC conformance control I think it is a powerful tool and and I feel confident that if these displays can continue to be calibrated and profiles to .3/.4 dE, then the teams can be confident in their decisions on colour made visually.

In preparation for the future move towards ISO accreditation in the printer supplier base, they are now about to embark on a validation based on the Ugra UDACT certification. Now this will give them a separate software test that Danny referred to, albeit using the same instrumentation.

Initial results suggest that whilst the ADC perform well, they would be relegated to 'layout purposes" only by this test. They fail on variation in grey balance that is outside tolerance.

My feeling at the moment that a practical solution is that each art team will have to have at least one display that conforms as suitable for full soft proofing under the UDACT criterion, so that softproofs can be signed off on a certified display by the art editor.

And as Apple no longer support the complete installed hardware base with a possible conforming display (!) the client will have to look to the Eizo/NEC/Quato range.
