one additional thing to try is the "balance" function of PM5. That will try to balance the max black. I think the button is in the separations setup.
Also, your lighting might be playing a role and even bronzing or some other surface problem might be cropping up.
Canvas = many surface reflections and a greater chance for strange surface behavior to show up visually.
