A great big thank you to Mr. Wyse! We have finally found the sweet
spot for my friends setup. There is a huge difference using Spectral
Vision as you suggested and it was much easier and quicker too. The
neutrality is back, the sharpness has even improved. My friend is
very happy and busily printing today.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Out of curiosity, why aren't you using SpectralVision to build your
profiles? You'll probably find it does a better job with GCR and
neutrals than ProfileMaker, especially if you use the XRite/Monaco
2,989 patch chart. With any of the x800/x880 Epsons make sure you
use 100% GCR with a black start of 0% (L*100 in SpectralVision).
Also, I've always found that, even after setting the total ink
limit in ColorBurst, the profile itself needs some additional total
ink limiting. 260-300% are very typical numbers for me.
Using the Lightness linearization should also net you a small
improvement in profile quality as well.
