Wow, has this thread gotten long and complicated. First, a couple of
observations.
1. I have never seen a problem in shadow rendering on a monitor
calibrated and profiled with an EyeOne Pro, of any revision, when
using either Match of Profilemaker. Maybe this is because the
measurement time is rather long and noise is averaged out, but it's
never been an issue. Also realize that hue differences in dark colors
are rather hard to detect by eye. One would normally verify L*a*b*
values when editing by using the eyedropper tool anyway.
2. I have, on the other hand, seen color casts result from using the
EyeOne Display.
3. Dedicated colorimeters are great.
But how does it all wash out? This is how it boils down for me:
1. If you are at all critical about color you will buy a a really
good monitor, and it will come with its own dedicated colorimeter.
This is the best solution.
2. If you have to calibrate lesser monitors, let's say because your
boss (or client, if you're a consultant) is cheap, which is the norm,
an EyeOne Pro or other Spectrometer is best, and the former should be
in the tool kit of any color maven for a lot of reasons.
