- Thread-topic: Printing profile test targets WITHOUT photoshop
Sorry guys, I tend to view these threads via the archive and can thus
immediately refer to the original post in a thread but I guess many of you
just view it from your inbox.
Yes Roger you are partially right. I do not have photoshop. I use UFRAW
for raw conversion and then take my images into gimp for editing. These two
components of the workflow work quite acceptably for my purposes. I had
reason to use the gimp for scientific image manipulation some years ago and
it was thus a path of low resistance for me to begin using it for digital
photo editing. It was also a path of zero cost which was quite appealing!
Where I strike some problems is with the printing side of the equation. In
my opinion, gimp-print/gutenprint is not adequate. Or at least I have not
been able to make it so with my naïve efforts previously. I have
contemplated purchasing a RIP to handle this and am quite interested in
QIMAGE but would need to install an emulator or parallels or boot camp etc.
Anyway, I have been using the Mac Preview application to print images, hence
my questions about it. In this case I was trying to ascertain whether
Preview would leave the data in an untagged image alone and allow me to
print a test target. I'm happy enough with it handling the printing of my
images so far as I can apply a printer profile via Colorsync.
Ultimately it looks like I should heed the advice of a color management
afficionado I spoke with many months ago and ditch Preview in favour of
something meant for the job. Unfortunately it takes me a little time to
save up my pocket money for the new toys though......
Thanks for your responses.
Cheers
James
