Hi Mike,
you may try Quato's iColor Display calibration software, which is
IMHO a quite capable piece of code. The OS 9 version is frozen at
version 2.5 - nevertheless, you should achieve a fairly high level of
precision with this tool, depending on the display you use. Here is a

and you may acquire a software license through their support.
I use much the same setup like you have: an ancient Howtek D4000,
driven by Silverfast, running on a 11 years old G4. Still kickin'
ass, when we get transparencies.
