Thanks for the responses on this. To answer the questions from Roger,
Chris and Matthew :
I am seeing it on a Macbook Pro 2.2Ghz, OS 10.5.8, GeForce 8600M GT
using dual display : the laptop LCD screen and an Eizo CG211 attached
via the DVI port.
The Eizo is profiled using Color Navigator and an i1 display 2.
The Macbook Pro is profiled using the same device with EyeOne Match 3
but I have never found the built-in display at all accurate even after
profiling (so I don't bother profiling it regularly) and all colour
work is done using the Eizo. One thing that is useful about the built
in MBP display is that the difference between 255 and 254 or 253 is
immediately visible to the eye whereas 253 is just perceptibly grey on
the profiled Eizo.
I am determining display values using Apple's DigitalColor Meter
application, both screens give 253 in Firefox 3.5.3 and the readout
supports what I see by eye on the screen.
The background image currently on the home page of my website is a
case in point (its the 350px high x 950px wide image containing the
boot against pure white) I also see it on images I have shot for
clients, on their websites when using Firefox 3.5.3. I don't see the
problem in Safari or Firefox 2 where such images display as pure white
255/255/255. I would be interested to know how other Firefox 3.5
users see my homepage image.
It could be I'm doing something stupid or missing something obvious to
colour professionals but I can't see what.
Thanks again for your help
Tony
