Bob,
Vista was recused by its main client base, the IT managers of big
corps, who refused to install it and stayed with XP instead. Thus the
first reason for the failure of Vista to sell was that XP was so good
that everyone actually liked it. A major issue at launch with Vista
was missing drivers, and also a lot of machines were labelled as
"Vista compatible" for commercial reasons but could not in fact run
it. Then the economy hit, and people got fired and no new computers
were bought so there was little point in company- wide upgrades. Then
Netbooks invaded the market and again they could not run Vista. In
the end Vista was a major commercial failure for Microsoft although
the system itself was pretty solid; Windows 7 seems to have had
considerable user interface work done, driver writers have had more
cooperation from interplanetary command and as a result this is doing
well. Microsoft certainly learned from Vista that users want systems
that work on existing hardware at launch, and have nice interfaces,
and to their credit their culture has become more user-centric.
