Which is a clue that Preview's output rendering is likely many factors simpler coding than other applications. So it 'just works.'

Who is going to pay for that? Apple certainly won't allocate a budget for it. It's not Adobe's problem. Peripherals manufacturers have *zero* interest in tracking down these issues that affect maybe 1% of their market and their incredibly tight product release schedules.
Finally, you all bought the printers and will continue to buy them warts and all. There are zero economic incentives for it to get any better. Adobe and Apple would both suggest this is an 'opportunity to add value.' I'd argue their reasoning equates to the parable of the broken window.
Which is why, again, the only medium-term viable option is Free software. It doesn't mean the problems go away. But it does mean they can be addressed by anyone with the desire to take on the issue. Freedesktop.org+argyll cms+Ghostscript are good places to start.
