Well, I'm not worried about whether they want me to contact the printer or not if I am not getting the info I need. Call the printer and say hey "hey, I'm setting up a job for you and need to know which cmyk space to use". When in doubt SWOP v2 is a reasonable assumption if you are lacking specific information.

"Hmmm" is exactly right, Tyler.
There is no such animal as "generic CMYK" in the real world of printing
on
presses. Yes, there is a profile called "Generic CMYK", but it doesn't
match
any known press in actual existence.
Your clients sound like they don't want to be pinned down with any
responsibility for the output.
You must insist until they provide a precise specification for an
ACTUAL
printing environment (such as, for example, US Web Coated (SWOP) v2, or
GRACoL2006_Coated1v2, to name only two of the several possible ones).
If they keep repeating their "generic CMYK" bit, then ask to speak to
their
prepress specialists (if they have any).
<snip>
Marco,
When faced with situations like this, I (as you recommend) try to talk
with the prepress people/printer. But when that is not possible, is
there any advantage to providing, for example, a US Web Coated (SWOP)
v2 (or US Sheetfed Coated v2) rather than submitting a generic CMYK? I
have a client who requests (IMHO) nonsense specifications *and*
instructs me *not* to contact the printer/prepress ("because it isn't
necessary"). I have been creatively getting around this, but there is
no guarantee that I will be able to keep finding out who is printing
the job.
Thanks,
Jim
