It seems like it's available in the OS and waiting for apps to catch up.
If you have developer tools installed in 10.5 or later you can run a utility and play with changing the display rez.
Go to /Developer/Applications/Performance Tools/Quartz Debug
You have to quit and relaunch apps for them to see the change - if they are able to see it at all... I wonder if lightroom takes notice?
