From what I've read, it sounds like they're the same printer and same inks, minus the green and orange. Supposedly it makes little difference for photographic subject matter, but it makes it harder to hit more custom spot colors in a proofing situation. Advantage of a 7890 would be cost and two less inks to worry about. Disadvantage would be less gamut in a relatively narrow range of circumstances. Otherwise the machines seem to be very nearly identical. I have experience with a 9900 but haven't yet seen a 7890/9890 printer.
