I agree. The presence of color bars can prevent subsequent reproductions from being horrible but they'll also increase the chances that they won't be great. I often have to make custom edits to an image to get the art to appear correct. The corrections may be needed because of unique properties of colorants in the original that look one way to the camera and another to the eye. Or it may be because the reproduction will be drastically smaller than the original piece which can alter the perceived effect of fine color detail in the original. Someone who corrects to color bars without seeing the original will get a reasonable reproduction of the original and a great set of color bars, but it won't be the sort of match I can achieve by custom correcting for the unique properties of the original.
