This is now starting to feel a bit surreal.
I just upgraded to 12.2.3 (from 12.1.0).
As I had done earlier, I placed images into Word, with and without embedded
profile. Again, no visible difference whatsoever between the embedded and
unembedded files once they are inside the Word document.
Also, I see none of the described "extremely oversaturated" appearance of an
sRGB image inside Word as described in Brian's message if I tag it with
ProPhoto RGB.
In other words, as far as color is concerned, nothing appears differently
from earlier versions of Word.
Unless there is a sneaky, poorly-documented preference or setting somewhere
that I missed that activates ICC color management in Word. But I looked all
over the place and found nothing of the sort.
