Yes. 10.6.4 and CS5 represent a trouble free combination. Here's to hoping it stays that way.

Depends on the printer in question. However, it's not likely that you'll find a RIP that outperforms a modern inkjet driver in terms of color gamut and DMax.
WIth either a RIP or driver you'll want to focus on the type of profile used and choice of rendering intent as this can have a much greater impact on color gamut, DMax, grey balance, etc. You'll also want to ask what your ultimate goal is: are you looking to make fine art prints with gamut maximization and optimal gray balance or are you simulating a press color space? And what media would be best for that goal? These are the questions where you'll probably want to focus your attention.
