In what is known as "illuminant metamerism", a "metameric match" occurs
between TWO specimens viewed by a "color-normal" human observer under ONE
light source. That is what the term indicates. "Metameric failure" occurs
when the TWO (still TWO) separate specimens no longer match one another
under a different, but still SINGULAR, light source.
On the other hand, the variability of appearance of ONE specimen among
different light sources is due to that specimen's own color inconstancy.
So, though the concepts are related, they are also distinct. It's either one
or the other. Can't use a shortcut and start referring to both as just
"metamerism": it's not sufficient as a descriptor.
That is why neither "metameric match" nor "metameric failure" applies in
instances of color inconstancy. It's a misleading and incorrect use of the
terms.
Best.
