I agree with your points. Those diagonal lines are not the issue, in my
opinion. As you mention, they do change in shape, prominence and extent
depending on the profile that is being assigned to the file.
What one looks out for in a Granger Rainbow are signs of clipping and
posterization -- sharp drops in transitions between proximate tonalities.
And also for perceivable "blotchiness", "dirtiness", or a "spotted" look
(areas that appear incongruously lighter or darker than their surroundings),
which denotes irregularities and unevenness in the profile's tone mapping.
