Every DisplayPort to DVI adapter I've used has worked flawlessly. The difference between an adapter and a cable that adapts is trivial. However, I have yet to see a DVI to DisplayPort adapter that works without problems. If you've got a Mac Pro without a Display Port and want to use Apple's new 27 Cinema Display, for example, the only reasonable solution is to replace the video card, which is pricey.
