Hi Jonathon
The dongle thing you mention: do you mean a USB dongle or a big silver
thing? The latter is for converting the default cable (Mac Serial) to PC
Serial.
The green Spectolino had the license dongle built in for Profilemaker. The
purple one used a separate USB dongle. Again, this was for launching
Profilemaker (depending on the license that was purchased) and only needed
if you wanted to run that software. Otherwise, the Spectrolino /
Spectroscan simply ran from the app you wanted to use it for, including most
RIP packages that have at least (re)linearization and, where applicable, ICC
building capability.
The unit was made for Macs (serial) and, via an included adapter (a silver
box about the size of your palm), PCs using the 9 pin serial port. As was
noted by others, you can use a Serial to USB adapter. I'd suggest the
Keyspan USA-19H which does the trick perfectly.
Other things to know, that haven't been mentioned:
If you are going to profile LCD monitors, don't use the suction cup device
because it will delaminate your monitor panel. Use the weighted device if
you have it. Otherwise lay the monitor on its back and rest the SPectrolino
on top. Before you try to calibrate / profile an LCD type monitor you will
need to fish on the X-Rite site and download the latest firmware you can
find. There was a bug which caused the Brightness indicator (in the first
calibration step of MeasureTool - part of Profilemaker 5.x suite) to hunt
endlessly.
There is also other tools available from X-Rite for checking that the
Spectroscan table is working OK. Basically you print a geometric image from
this tool on a laser printer and then have the Spectroscan line it up, then
do a whole heap of fancy movements and then it should come back within a
certain distance of the starting point.
One other thing, I used to find that if I moved the Spectroscan around (in a
case) by car or plane, the read head whould come loose and not lift off the
media properly. To fix this you must remove the plastic cover off the main
gantry and tighten 4 little black screws (2 at each end) of the metal gantry
under the removed plastic cover. If you're not sure - or have any other
Q's, shoot me a message.
As was noted though, the unit is slooow but spectacular. I have i1's, an
i0, the Spectrolino / Spectroscan and the new Barbieri LFP v3. The latter
is, finally, a worthy contender to the title of the most accurate and
repeatable device but the Spectrolino/Spectroscan is still arguably the
best. I love mine. Still. :)
Good luck.
Scott

Subject: Spectroscan
Ok, so I recently came across like new spectrolino spectroscan. I have never
had the opportunity to use one of these things that people speak so fondly
of. It came with some sort of a dongle looking thing that is a serial
connection I think. This dongle also has a plug in it for a power cord
(which is missing).
My questions are:
1. Is the dongle looking thing necessary? If so how do I find a power cord
for it?
2. How would I connect this to a computer that only has USB and Firewire
ports? Will it function through an adapter?
3. What makes this device better than an isis or a DTP70?
4. What is it worth?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon Crook
