Andrew, I read some things in your review that troubled my view of the i1 software.
In particular, the Holy ColorChecker scheme. That chart is great as a reference point and profile creation for photographers since its swatches are there to hammer out a color space for a camera. But that is the problem: those swatches were meant for cameras and not printers. They are nearly all on the edge of reproducability and I would wager are outside of the gamut that your printer is actually able to reproduce, no matter your paper-and-ink combination! You may never get those swatches to match. It seems like it's a poor standard to check against and I'm confused why X-Rite would bother.
Another troubling thing that I see, at least from the photo on your site, is how off the grays are. That would scare the heck out of me! I know, metamerism, reflectivity, etc. I'd be PO'd if that's what X-Rite gave to me.
Also, for the "smoothness" slider: I feel that you may get a different result if you test printed a black-to-white gradation instead of solid swatches. I would imagine the purpose of that slider is to improve the reproduction of smooth gradients: seeing any delta E change when messing with that slider would defeat the whole purpose!
