Hi -
The Library received thousands of scanner created TIFF image files from all over the world as part of our "World Digital Library" program. These files frequently have no color profile - scanners generally simply indicate only that this is an RGB file (using a 1 in the photometric interpretation tag). Upon receipt, all files are validated using JHOVE. Think of receiving files off a Digibook A00 overhead scanner from the National Library of Iraq and you can begin to see the problems.
In order to standardize the files as much as possible, they currently add an sRGB profile to the image file. Previously they did this as a batch operation in Photoshop. The group has recently received a set of new Macs running Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Now they ave found that using the Apple Automator to run “Apply ColorSync Profile to Images” on TIFFs caused them to fail the JHOVE validation process. Running the color profile change in Photoshop seems to cure that.
My question is what is going on? Why do the ColorSync profile applications fail and the Photoshop change cure it?
Thanks,
-Barry
