I've used these naming conventions for over 11 years now:
Output devices: [person or company name] [model#] [media] ([abbreviated driver media selection]) [date]
Ex: Onsight 9900 Fine Art Pearl (UPPPL) 1-11
Translation: This profile was made for Onsight's Epson 9900 on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl paper using the "Ultra Premium Presentation Luster" driver media selection in January of 2011.
Display devices: [brand] [model] [color temp] [gamma] [luminance] [date]
Ex: Apple 27" 5600K 22G 120L 1-11-11
Translation: This profile is for an Apple 27" CInema Display calibrated to 5600K, a 2.2G TRC, at 120 Luminosity on 1-11-11
Of course, you can adapt this to insert any other pertinent profiling information. If you are playing around with the Perceptual Rendering options you can insert something towards the end of the file name to denote this. Or if you are profiling the same device through different workflow applications (Like Labtricity vs ROES) you can put the initials for these apps at the end of the profile name. I like to keep these specifics in parentheses.
Ex: Onsight 7760 Phaser (Enhanced,None) 1-11
Translation: This profile is for Onsight's Xerox Phaser 7760 color laser printer using the "Enhanced" and "None" options in the driver on January of 2011
or
Ex. Onsight 3705 Endura VC (ROES) 1-11
Translation: This profile is for Onsight's Noritsu 3705 printer with Kodak Endura VC paper through ROES software on January 2011
or
Ex. CenveoSA Komori UnisourceGloss (front,G7,Curve2) 1-11-11
You get the idea.
Generally, I don't find it helpful to include the printer or paper's manufacture's name. Anyone can figure out that a "9900" is an Epson and "Endural" is made by Kodak for example. Occasionally there are exceptions.
Starting the profile name with the person or company's name allows all of their profiles to be nicely grouped together alphabetically for easy selection later. This isn't as necessary for the display profile so I leave out the name on them.
Hope this helps!
