Greetings Roger,
If the image is not embedded In Illustrator CS4 (guessing CS5 would be the same) you can find profile information by following these steps:
1. In the Links palette highlight the image in question.
2. In the Links palette select Link File Info
3. In the Link File Info window select Advanced and tilt down the Schema triangles until you find the one that lists the profile. A limited test showed the second one to be the one with the profile information.
If you change you color settings to preserve embedded profiles you can place images with different profiles in Illustrator.
If an image is embedded, it appears that you are not able to ascertain the profile of the image.
