While setting up a new computer system, I decided to do some Colorchecker
tests.
A lab image file of average measured values was downloaded from the
Babelcolor site.
Printing was done with Photoshop 12.02 and profile target printing with the
Adobe color printer utility.
The printer was an Epson 3880 with the drivers preloaded on a Macbook Pro
(early 2011) running 10.6.7.
Lab Image file was switched to AdobeRGB, 16 bit and printed. Comparisons
were made under a Solux light.
The homegrown profile was made with Monaco Profiler, with an aging DTP70
that is doubtless well out of calibration.
After negotiating the hurt-me buttons in the various dialog boxes, the
following was found:
-Vendor mode -printer manages colors- produces good prints, but the deepest
blue was strongly off (row 3 col1).
-Canned profile with relative colorimetric rendering WITHOUT black point
compensation produced good matching prints, except for the perennial red
square.
-Canned relative colorimetric with BPC produced slightly veiled prints.
-A profile made with 343 (!) patches produced the subjectively best set of
prints.
What was astonishing was that all my foobarred prints - made with wrong
driver settings - produced colors that were at first sight tolerable and
would not have disturbed most non-specialists.
So:
- I don't understand why BPC should be considered harmful. Go ahead and
educate me!
- Vendor mode is nice but that blue field is troubling.
- Canned works ok.
- A simple custom profile produced very good results on this file.
- The Photoshop 12.02 printpath looks ok.
- There are too many "hurtme" buttons in the driver.
