Set the system prefs so, that you need to press the Fn key as well as the F key that changes the display brightness...
Works for me.
Also: not entirely sure on the nec, but maybe colorEyes display pro is able to adjust the monitors internal LUT.
On the iPhone right now, but you might be able to find that info on colorwiki or the manufacturers website.

I will still be using the NEC along side as the bellwether but having both in somewhat sync would be great. Since the iMac has it's brightness control as part of the keyboard, like notebooks, is there any way to override this so those of us who type badly do not constantly change the brightness not on purpose?

I have given up trying to wrestle my Nikon D800 files out of my outdated MacPro so I have ordered an iMac. Hopefully this will at least move me in a positive direction. Not perfect but better. My question to all of you is what is the best way to calibrate the display? I am currently using a SpectraView setup on my NEC which works well. But I sense the iMac is a different animal. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
