I will come in again and remind everyone there is a simple NEC cable. It just goes to the thunderbolt/mini display port to the NEC display port. The NEC display port looks like an HDMI port, which is NOT the HDMI port. It is actually the NEC display port. NEC does have an HDMI port as well. Don't get them mixed-up /confused.
When using this cable, there is complete control of the NEC PA271w, which I use connected to my MacBook Pro 8,3 17 inch non-glare display.
This dual USB + Displayport-Mini connector you were advised to use is worthless. I tried three of them. Two Apple branded and one from OWC.
Apple, in my opinion for some reason will not guide users to this simple cable. No cost from NEC! And about seven dollars from

I, me, spent days looking to resolve this issue. Now others are doing the same.
Regarding the critical profiling of the new iMac display, it will never every match the NEC display. It is just not built the way the independent NEC is.

I have given up trying to wrestle my Nikon D800 files out of my outdated MacPro so I have ordered an iMac. Hopefully this will at least move me in a positive direction. Not perfect but better. My question to all of you is what is the best way to calibrate the display? I am currently using a SpectraView setup on my NEC which works well. But I sense the iMac is a different animal. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I had been advised to use the dual USB + Displayport-Mini connector, but the screen works at native resolution with a cheap Displayport > Displayport-mini cable. I'm seeing an issue with deep sleep however : the Nec won't come back when it has been sitting idle for many hours. It seems that this is a known issue due to cables that are not VESA 1.1a compliant http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3533 and I will have to be more selective in picking another. Meanwhile, I switch the NEC on and off. The NEC is calibrated with i1DisplayPro-Spectraview II and the MBP with i1DisplayPro-i1Profiler. I'm still in the learning curve, hoping that SVII and DPP are not contradicting one another, and there are also so many options to be aware of with NEC MultiProfiler etc... The match is good but not absolutely perfect, perhaps due to the fact that one is a wide gamut display and the other is not. My opinion is that sRGB images should look identical on both, and I might have to be more savvy to make it better. What's interesting so far is that the MPB screen is giving me sRGB feedback of the NEC wide gamut rendering. My two cents…
