No doubt, but it's a *lot* better than nothing. And it's generally consistent with enough variables held constant. Keep the same lens on the same camera and shoot some bracketed exposures and the information will generally be correct within whatever standard the camera is calibrated to, even if that standard is quite a ways from any recognizable absolute standard.
It's also the sort of thing that could very easily be remedied by the manufacturers, probably even with a minor firmware revision, if they cared to do so. But nobody else cares, so why should they?
