Hmm...I should further add: Raw Photo Processor ships with some very high quality matrix profiles that our own Iliah has made from lens-less measurements of camera responses to monochromatic light sources.
They're general-purpose tools not suited for precision reprographic work, but few photographers will have the patience and / or skills to create better profiles than what're built into RPP.
Again, it's entirely doable to create very high quality ICC profiles for your particular combination of camera / illuminant / lens / etc. You're just not going to get there by photographing a classic ColorChecker (and, yes, you recommended the SG -- I'm just using the classic for hyperbole) on an easel in your back yard and processing it through Adobe Camera RAW. The basic idea is the same, but there's a bit more to the execution.
