Randy,
In quick answer to your questions:
> Do I set the Rip as CMYK+O and supply a CMYKO profile with i1 profiler?
That's the best way to do it, yes. But to do that, you must open the Media Library, select the media and mode where you want to add the profile, right click, then select 'Import ICC', then import the profile, then set it as the default.
> Do I set the as CMYK+O and supply a standard CMYK profile from i1 profiler?
No. That won't work.
> Do I set the Rip to CMYK+O and use the Onyx profile generation for a CMYK profile?
You can, but the Onyx ICC profile-making engine is not as good as the i1 Profiler engine.
> Do I set the Rip for CMYK and install a CMYKO profile?
No. That won't work either.
> I'd like to optimize the use of the Orange ink for gamut expansion of course. Any ideas on the best way to go?
Onyx is a great RIP for this purpose, but it's a steep learning curve to get all it's got to give out of it. Far more than you'll find answers for on a forum.
> If I create the CMYKO profile using i1 Profiler, then I should measure a solid Orange ink patch on my media (canvas) and enter that into i1 Profiler. Should I enter the Lab values of an Orange patch that has the highest saturation I can print or highest density?
That's honestly not all that critical. In fact, you can enter any number you want; it really doesn't matter. The profile-making engine will determine the actual value of the orange primary from the printed patches. But typically, just to be precise, I measure whatever the max orange is on a given media in the linearization patches, and use that.
Good luck.
