Peter,
On an older Epson 3200 scanner I have covered the white calibration strip
inside with a "similar" white strip as the old one got dirty/unusable by
fluids/glues I used in scanning (there is an explanation for that). That
scanner is now solely used for documents and other low quality scanning.
I would not recommend changing that strip, it is located in between the
glass of the scanner bed and the scanner cover and the glass is usually
glued to the cover. You would need a spectrometer to check the white of the
old strip and find the right replacement. I did not make much work of
finding the right white and put the calibration strip on top of the glass
instead of in between. At first I used it with a new scanner profile though
I doubt that it was enough to compensate for the changes made in the
hardware.
Vuescan has a "Raw Format", DNG labeled but internally just a raw tiff that
is accepted by Photoshop ARC. It should show whether the basic exposure of
the reflective scan is not clipped, the Vuescan software does not interfere
on that export format. I think Silverfast has something similar.
