Actually, the adaptation starts happening right in the photo-receptor. That's
why if you stare at one image for a length of time, you get an after image
when you eventually move your eyes. Our white point adaption can largely be
explained as the consequence of this "automatic gain control" of each receptor
cell type (short, medium, long).
