Dear Lou,
The inital release of Acrobat Pro X (version 10.0.0) had problems with
regard to soft proofing a PDF file, even in you had all the
Preferences/Color Management settings correct on a properly
calibrated/profiled display. What you need to do is to update it to its
latest version, which is 10.1.13. Following the update it should do a decent
simulation of the printed image.
Let's assume that you receive a print ready PDF file from your premedia
house prepared in a FOGRA39L dataset based CMYK colorspace, such as ISO
Coated v2 (ECI), and that you have a display calibrated/profiled to a white
point in the 5800ºK to 6000ºK range, a gamma of 2.2 and a luminance level of
100 nits (cd/sqm). The monitor white is a good simulation of the paper white
under D50 illuminant and the color image a is good representation of the
printed image. Adobe does a sloppy work when simulating Paper Color and
Black Ink, hence we do keep these functions switched off.
Just make sure that the CMYK colorpace set in the Preferences/Color
Management and the Simulation Profile in the Output Preview (if open) are
the same that is used by the premedia company when constructing the PDF
file.
Best,
Refik Telhan
