As regards to using photoshop, When I need ‘granular’ manual control I use the following technique, which has worked very well for me.
In photoshop I use a combination of difference and linear doge blend modes
1- shoot a good white reference image to record light falloff, color shifts ect, spot it and blur it around 20~30 pixels
2 -use the clipping levels display to find the brightest pixels in the white reference. Sample the color of the those pixels.
3- make layer above the white reference and flood that layer with the sampled color.
3 - put the blend mode of the upper layer to difference.
4- put both the upper layer and the white reference layer inside a folder
5 - change the folder blend mode of the folder to "linear dodge (add)"
6- Drag and drop the folder on the images that were shot with the same light fall off as the white reference.
...Then, if I need I can then tweak the amount this layer adds with the opacity slider on the folder, or more commonly for me, I adjust the underlying image.
I used this resently on a set of micrographic images of diatoms that were shot with oblique illumination that needed to be stitched together.
The white reference and the images couldn’t be shoot with the consistency and precision that makes it easy for me to use equalight.
The above technique allowed for relatively easy hand-adjustment in photoshop to equalise them before I feed them to the stitching software
