shadows darken a sample and as color is 3-dimensional I don’t get your point.

Sorry, disagree. When measuring textiles (or any other textured and/or uneven material) the shadows produced by a single-angle illumination are the biggest issue.

You simply do not measure what you see as you (usually) do not look at these samples from a distance where you actually see the shadows that a spectro sees when it measures in direct contact.
