Hmmm...I'm hard-pressed to think of any reasons for gamma encoding in any context that don't ultimately depend upon either hardware specs or limited bit depth or both. Maybe they're a step or so removed, such as if your OS isn't color managed so you want your non-managed applications to show not-miserable color by sending raw data to your display, which means having the display emulate the gamma response of an ancient TV studio device.
But, yeah. Given perfect hardware and brazilians of bits per channel, gamma encoding becomes pretty much superfluous in a color managed environment.
...but it's only been recently that we've started to see displays and graphics subsystems with high-bit-depth internals....
