Good description. I would add that for some printing situations the print head is stationary and the media moves under the head while the nozzles are fired.

Wikipedia has a good introduction:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inkjet_printing
Ink is fed to a printhead. The printhead moves back and forth across the paper, and the paper is fed through the printer. The printhead itself has an array of nozzles...a minimum of one per ink, but, in practice, dozens or hundreds (or thousands?) of nozzles are used to enable faster printing at higher resolutions. Each nozzle is independently controlled so the printhead sprays a precise amount of ink from a nozzle at a precise moment.
Two main technologies are used to cause the ink to spray: heat and piezoelectrics. Most printers use a resistive electrical heating element in each nozzle that boils and vaporizes the ink in the nozzle, forcing it to spray outwards to the paper. The rest apply a voltage to a piezoelectric material in the nozzle chamber, causing the material to change shape and thereby push out the ink.
Cheers,
b&
