I'm not familiar with "CameraRAW Presets", it's probably not "Rocket Science"?
I was thinking of, eventually, settling with systematically adjusting the
exposure slider to get the tone distribution that I want, as I've been doing
recently. But I figure I would still be losing details that way? May not be a
long term solution...

Roger,
Are you inadvertently applying a preset in ACR with an adusted exposure? That
would explain your results. Or your defaults might have been accidently tweaked.
You might try creating a new preset for this camera that boosts the exposure,
bringing it in line with your expectations.
