I am absolutely NOT a DNG expert; this is my first reading of the spec
(dng_spec_1_6_0_0.pdf).
However, a direct reading of page 84 seems to indicate that the linear
reference space uses unmatrixed sensor pixel values that have been linearized
and scaled to values between 0 and 1.0. So, it is still the camera signal
space, but normalized. (I hesitate to call it a color space, since it has not
been converted to a standard color space yet.)
Then, page 85 continues with the conversion from linear reference space to XYZ.
So, as I read it, linear reference space is unique to the camera design, and in
general is not XYZ, except in the unusual case of the camera pixel filters and
sensor response being designed to produce XYZ values directly.
