Sound Manager

Hello!

I'm new to Mac and would like to do some soundprogramming. Is "Sound Manager" something that belongs to the past (Mac OS <10) or is it still recommended to use it in X?

I would be happy for links to audioprogramming on Mac OS X. The samplecodes on the Apple website seem to cover mostly programming for Mac OS 9 and earlier. Thanks!
