Somebody had a problem getting the pan parameter to do anything when

Ideally, in the future we would like to see pan work even for stereo sources, but
in the meantime it's possible to use an AUDeinterleaver to split
a stereo bus into two mono busses which then feed into two mixer inputs
(mono) which can be independently panned as on an ordinary mixing board.

That explains some problems that I have been having.

But, I am also having problems setting parameters for the effects units. For, the matrix reverb I can set the property for the type of reverb. But, if I want to adjust the parameters individually, nothing happens.

This is a question about the mixer unit:
Can/Should I have 1 mixer unit and use the (several) connections to busses so that the mixer is really mixing serveral sources?

You really can do whatever you wish. You can have multiple mixers if needed. It's very flexible.
Andre.
